A vegetable box subscription is a different kind of shopping from walking into a shop and choosing each item yourself. Some people love the constraint. Others find it frustrating. This is an honest account of how our Thursday box works, who tends to get the most out of it, and a few things to consider before you sign up.
How the box contents are decided ¶
We decide what goes into the box on the morning of packing, based on what came in best from the farms that week. There is no fixed contents list and we do not publish one in advance. The reason is simple: the farm decides what is ready, not us. A fixed list would mean either stocking items that are not at their best or sourcing from further away to fill the gaps. Neither is something we want to do.
What a typical summer box contains ¶
In July and August, a box will typically include four to six vegetables and one or two fruit items. A recent box included Manganji sweet peppers, Kamo eggplant, mizuna, bitter melon, cherry tomatoes from a farm in Nara, and two Okayama white peaches. The total weight is usually between 1.5kg and 2kg. We include a short note with each box explaining what each item is, where it came from, and one suggestion for how to cook it.
Delivery area and timing ¶
We deliver within Fushimi ward on Thursday afternoons, between 13:00 and 18:00. If you live outside Fushimi ward but within central Kyoto, contact us and we will let you know whether we can include you on the route. We are not currently able to deliver outside Kyoto city for the weekly box, though we do post gift sets by refrigerated courier.
How to pause or cancel ¶
Let us know by Sunday evening if you need to skip the following Thursday. We order from the farms on Sunday, so that is the cut-off point. Cancelling the subscription entirely requires two weeks' notice. We do not lock you into a minimum term, but we do ask for that notice period so we can adjust our farm orders accordingly.
The weekly box works best for households that cook most evenings and are comfortable cooking with whatever is seasonal and available. If you want more control over what you receive, the shop floor is the better option. If you have questions, contact us at hello@ashvaultline.com before signing up.
